Mouth Emergency? These Warning Signs Require Urgent Dental Care

Unexplained Toothache

The pain in your mouth is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. It is vital to treat unexplained tooth pain as soon as possible. Until you can see an emergency dentist, it's best to rinse your mouth with salt water, apply a cold compress to the affected area, and use over-the-counter pain medication to ease your pain and discomfort.

Swollen or Bleeding Gums

You shouldn't ignore swollen gums that won't stop bleeding. Since these symptoms indicate an underlying dental or medical issue, you'll need to see a qualified emergency dentist immediately. While waiting to see them, try to control the bleeding by grabbing a clean, damp gauze and pressing it gently against the affected area. You may hold a small ice pack for about 10 minutes against the bleeding gums.

Loose Teeth

A loose tooth requires immediate dental attention. Otherwise, this issue may lead to bite alignment problems and significantly affect your ability to chew. While waiting for your appointment, avoid eating, brushing, flossing, and touching the loose tooth.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A broken or cracked tooth may constitute a dental emergency if the remaining tooth has sharp edges that can cut into your lips and gums. Besides affecting bite alignment, a broken tooth can also lead to jaw problems. A break going deep into the tooth's pulp increases your risk of infection. You'll want to rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and apply a cold compress to your cheek while waiting for your emergency dental appointment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

An emergency dentist can save a tooth knocked out of your mouth due to heavy impact. Before your appointment, carefully pick up the tooth without touching the root and rinse it without scrubbing. Unless you can reinsert the tooth in the socket, it's best to place the tooth in a container of water or milk.

Do I Need an Emergency Tooth Extraction?

A dental extraction is a procedure to remove a tooth from your mouth. Tooth removal is necessary if one of your teeth is damaged beyond practical repair. We may need to pull teeth under the following circumstances:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection may make it impossible or too costly to repair a tooth.
  • Advanced gum disease may require a tooth to be pulled so it doesn't affect the supporting tissues and bone structures of your mouth.
  • A tooth may be extracted if it is blocking other teeth from coming in.
  • During orthodontic work, teeth may need to be removed to create room for the teeth that are being moved into place.
  • Wisdom teeth are often extracted either before or after they come in.
